The First Cattle show of the Essex Agricultural Society was on October 5, 1820 in Topsfield. The show was only a one-day event and as it is known the fair descended from The Cattle Show. According to historical documents, Topsfield was chosen because it was the most central point in Essex County in the days of stagecoach travel.
